A Choir of Distinction from the Swansea Valley, South Wales

Welcome

Cor y Gyrlais
Forum

Côr y Gyrlais was born out of a small group of friends who formed themselves into an entertainment group, performing for local charities and institutions in the Upper Swansea Valley in the late 1950’s/early 1960’s.  Such was their success and enthusiasm that a new male voice choir was formed in 1963 and Côr y Gyrlais was born.

From that time the choir has enjoyed a highly varied and successful career having performed in many parts of the UK and abroad.

Because the choir is made up of members from the several small towns and villages of the upper Swansea valley no generic ‘place’ name was suitable.  Therefore the name of a small tributary of the Tawe, the “Gyrlais”, which joins the main river near Ystradgynlais, was adopted.

Members of Côr y Gyrlais will expect to sing on many different platforms, from the smallest chapel in Ystradgynlais to the Royal Albert Hall—and everything in between.  We sing to support charities (both national and local), for private functions and social occasions (dinners, weddings, celebrations), and fund-raising concerts of all kinds.

The core objectives of the choir are the promotion, practice and public performance of choral music in the Welsh Male Voice tradition, the presentation of concerts and other activities to  entertain the aged, the infirm, and members of all good causes, and to compete in musical competition.

The Choir does not charge for its services, other than the cost of transport.    View>>
