The choir's name Côr y Gyrlais is derived from the tributary known as the "Gyrlais" that feeds into the river Tawe near the small town of Ystradgynlais, nestling in the upper reaches of the Swansea Valley, and it was here that the choir was originally formed in 1963.
During the early years, the focus was towards Charity Work and Eisteddfodau (Choral Competition) in the “40 Voices Class” and the choir has the proud record of having won all the recognised “Semi-Nationals” on more than one occasion, as well as the coveted Royal National Eisteddfod in Cardiff.
The latter years, however, have been devoted solely to the Concert Platform maintaining the emphasis on Charity Work. More recent beneficiaries include:-
The charity “DEBRA” (at the London Dorchester Hotel)
“The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland”
“The Children of Dublin Fund”
“The Charity Funded Schools of Africa”
“Round Table of the Channel Islands”.
Proud friends of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama
